YF 500MHz GPS 6″ LCD, 4GB Flash, 128MB RAM from DealExtreme
by

A review of the YF GPS available at dealextreme.com for $115.

The GPS from YF has a lot of features for a fraction of the price of a brand name GPS.  You can run TomTom, Garmin, iGO, NDrive and any WinCE 6.0 compatible GPS app on it.  It’s huge 6″ LCD screen (800×480) is perfect for the car.  The screen is very bright and nice to look at.  But like most LCD’s, when in direct sunlight, it can’t be a bit hard to see.

It already comes pre-installed with iGO 8 and maps of North America.  So it’s all ready to go.  You can add more maps if you want.  Updating the maps is a breeze.  Just plug it in and it shows up as a mass storage device, drag and drop your FBL map files.  Alternatively, you can add the same map files to a microSD card by creating a folder called \iGO8\content\map.  iGO will find the new map files there.

This GPS has a Atlas IV chip, which is basically a ARM processor mated with a SIRF GPS chip all-in-one.  Essentially a system-on-a-chip design. The ARM CPU runs at 500MHz and comes 128MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage.  It’s also upgradeable with microSD cards.  It comes with all the accessories you would need.  Literally everything is included, including the mount.

Battery life on this device isn’t too great… I think it lasts just a bit over an hour.  However, I only use this in the car and it’s usually plugged up to the 12V battery so battery life really isn’t a huge issue.  If you plan to use this to watch movies, play games or listen to music, I would advice getting an iPod touch 🙂
